Sum 41 Deliver Epic Performance On their Final Tour
Farewell tours always seem to have an extra sense of importance and hype around them, While these types of tours are getting more commonplace. it’s still an exciting sight to see when they’re done correctly. For celebrated pop punk act Sum 41, their farewell tour entitled The Setting Sum kicked off the Stone Pony Summerstage season in an exhiliarating and triumphant fashion. With their catalog of hits along with their most recent record, Sum 41 delivered plenty of fan favorite cuts while displaying their trademark high-energy stage show. Frontman Deryck Whibley’s high energy presence anchored the set and the innate chemistry between the band remains as seamless as ever. Credit also to the inclusion of both older and newer material with classic cuts like “Fat Lip” and “In Too Deep” synching up perfectly with newer tracks such as “Dopamine” off their latest release Heaven and Hell. Production-wise, Sum 41 pulled out all the stops with exciting visuals and each band member brought their respective A-game, it’s also a testament to their musicianship that each song was performed to their absolute fullest. The most noteworthy aspect of Sum 41’s performance is their genuine connection to the fans and that passion and sincerity shined through the entire duration of their performance.

Ska group The Interrupters were direct support and proved why they’re a mainstay on the Summerstage with their endlessly vibrant and upbeat performance. Frontwoman Aimee lee’s electric and interactive stage presence was a blast to watch and the band’s interactive and exuberant energy was consistently impressive. The Interrupter’s mix of originals and well-chosen covers was also a nice touch and their positive message of inclusion was refreshing and enjoyable. Overall, The Interrupters delivered a more than satisfying live experience that was an absolute highlight.
Kicking off the show earlier on, up and coming hip-hop duo Joey Valence and Brae delivered an immediately energizing set that more than showcased their appeal. Their on-stage chemistry was seamless and the duo’s stage banter and unique mix of influences from pop punk to 90’s hip-hop made for a dynamic live show. Each track had it’s own sense of style and flair and the boisterious and spontaneous energy Joey Valence and Brae brought was consistently exciting and notably unique. While their set was on the shorter side, that didn’t stop Joey Valence and Brae from dominating the stage and leaving a vibrant impression on the audience, showcasing they may be ready for a headlining set next time they’re in the area!
When it comes to farewell tours, their success can at times make or break a band’s legacy. For Sum 41, thankfully their final tour proved to be a successful celebration of their enduring appeal and a strong showcase of their truly exciting live show which will be missed by fans. With the welcome inclusion of acts The Interrupters and Joey Valance and Brae, their show also allowed a level of genre diversity that made for a truly well-rounded experience.
