Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (Don’t) Ruin Asbury Lanes
Having gone to many punk shows over the years, you get used to the occasional cover song thrown into the setlist. Usually it’s something by The Clash, The Ramones, or The Damned. But songs by Dolly Parton, John Denver, ABBA, and Paula Abdul? No way that could happen….unless you are at a Me First and the Gimme Gimmes show that is.
The punk rock supergroup treated a sold out crowd at Asbury Lanes to an eclectic setlist featuring their twist on songs like “Jolene”, “Country Roads”, “Dancing Queen”, and “Straight Up”. A mosh pit to “Over the Rainbow” and “ I Will Survive”? Yep, the show had that too. They even performed their latest cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Good 4 U”.
The night also included strong sets from The Defiant, another punk rock supergroup led by former Mighty Mighty Bosstones’ frontman Dickey Barrett, and the power punk rock trio UltraBomb.
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes wrap up their North American tour in early May before heading to Europe in June. Their new album, ¡Blow it…at Madison’s Quinceañera!, via Fat Wreck Chords, drops June 14.
