Part 1: Light of Day Had a Homecoming in Red Bank Late Last Week
The 25th anniversary of the Light of Day Winterfest, held at the iconic Count Basie Center for the Arts’ Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre in Red Bank, was a night packed with unforgettable performances, electric energy, and a few surprises that had the crowd buzzing. (But before we dive in, just a heads-up—this is a two-part story, so you’ll have to stay tuned for the answer to that question!)
What began in 1998 as a surprise birthday celebration for Bob Benjamin, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, has grown into the Light of Day Foundation. To date, it has raised over $6.5 million for Parkinson's research. Inspired by the generosity of his friends and guests, Benjamin teamed up with Tony Pallagrosi and Joe D'Urso in 2000 to create the charity.
Fast-forward 25 years, and Bob’s Birthday Bash kicked off with high energy and seamless hosting by Remember Jones, who kept the crowd engaged from start to finish.
The star-studded lineup was headlined by John Rzeznik, lead singer of the Goo Goo Dolls, and included performances from Jesse Malin, making his triumphant return to the Light of Day stage, and Brian Fallon of the Gaslight Anthem. Fallon teamed up with Pete Steinkopf of the Bouncing Souls and Brian Baker of Bad Religion for a blistering set. Other standout acts included Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers, Willie Nile, James Maddock, The Weeklings, Dramarama, Fantastic Cat, Joe D'Urso and Stone Caravan, among many others.
But perhaps the most thrilling part of the night was the swirling rumors—a mystery guest was expected to appear, and the crowd was on edge, eagerly awaiting the surprise. Is HE going to show up? Only time would tell…
