Hozier Offers Masterclass in Artistry at Forest Hills Performance

There are some artists that are just known for their ability to deliver a truly memorable performance that resonates long after it’s over. Irish singer-songwriter Hozier whose amassed a tremendously loyal fanbase came to Forest Hills Stadium where he sold out four consecutive shows. Long known for his passionate and introspective songwriting, Hozier and his band highlighted their true artistry and range with an uplifting, soulful and dynamic performance that left a tremendous impact on the audience. With a mix of sounds from blues and rock, to soulful balladry, Hozier’s rich musicality shined very brightly and his soaring vocals contained multitudes of emotion that were felt in every note. With a strong catalog of songs to choose from, Hozier and his band seamlessly balanced material from his most recent album Unreal Unearth including current hit “Too Sweet” and also delivered stirring renditions of fan favorites such as “Jackie and Wilson”, “From Eden”, and “Take Me To Church”.

Much credit to Hozier’s backing band who helped bring the songs to life in layered fashion and the genuine chemistry they shared together was captivating to watch. What truly stood out during Hozier’s performance was the inclusive message of his music, he took time out to not only express gratitude to his fans but to advocate for communities and causes such as the LGBTQ+ community and women’s rights. The commentary of his music has always been a selling point and thanks to his passionate and down to earth delivery, it truly struck a chord. Later in the show, Hozier emerged on a small stage within the crowd and performed two beautiful and stripped down renditions of “Cherry Wine” and “Unknown/Nth”, with the night sky behind him and illuminated by phone lighters in the air, it was a truly glorious concert moment to behold. As the night came to a close, Hozier had treated fans to a musical experience full of honesty, passion and an inspiring message of hope and acceptance.

Credit must also be given to his opener Allison Russell whose opening set was a powerful and engaging set of folk and world-inspired music led by an electrifying backing band. Russell’s down to earth and organic stage presence was utterly captivating to watch and her message of peace and compassion was genuinely moving. Throughout her set, her interactions with the crowd were vibrant and high-energy and her backing band had tremendous synergy together resulting in a unique and cohesive experience. Despite the short nature of her set, Allison Russell more than left an impact with her joyous and commanding performance and highlighted her sheer artistry and accomplished band in the process. Overall Hozier’s performance at Forest Hills was a staggering triumph and his pure artistry was on full display.
