Bobby Mahoney Celebrates Another Deadbeat Summer

Bobby Mahoney is no “fake-ass wanna be indie rocker”. The New Jersey songwriter proved just that with a blistering set on a hot-ass summer night in Asbury Park. Mahoney celebrated the release of his latest album Another Deadbeat Summer, his first under the Wicked Cool Records label, by headlining a great night of rock and roll at the Wonder Bar.

Mahoney played his new album in its entirety, including a raucous rendition of the title track, and showed off his talents as both a songwriter and guitar player. He was joined by numerous friends throughout the set including Reagan Richards and Gordon Brown from Williams Honor, saxophone player Zack Sandler, and Joe Pomarico, who satisfied everyone’s fever for more cowbell.

Joining Mahoney on the night were a trio of talented acts. East Brunswick natives Feeny kicked off the night with a loud and electric “acoustic” set. Up next was Asbury Park’s own indie-rock band Idle Wave, who treated the crowd to a solid set of its emo/alternative style. But it was fellow Wicked Cool Records artists Soraia who took the night up a notch. Led by their dynamic singer ZouZou Mansour, the band’s hard rock sound captivated the crowd and nearly stole the show. They were the perfect set up for Bobby and the boys to crank it up to eleven and close out the night.

If you missed this show, Mahoney has one more gig in Brooklyn at The Kingsland before spending the rest of the summer playing in Germany and the UK. In the meantime, I recommend checking out his new album wherever you buy/stream your music. And don’t sleep on Feeny, Idle Wave, or Soraia either.

Michael is an Asbury Park based photographer of what life puts in front of him. He snuck his camera into a concert for the first time in 2011 when he went to see Soundgarden on their reunion tour. Two of those shots ended up being published in Photofantasm Soundgarden: Nudedragons to King Animal, and he has been bringing his cameras to shows ever since. He relocated to Asbury in 2019 for its rich music and art scenes...and to save on tolls! He is a big supporter of the local music scene and has become well known amongst the bands for his photos. Michael is also a regular vendor at the Asbury Park Punk Rock Flea Market and can be found selling his prints at a variety of local markets.
